Paying the extra money for your seat could be worth it.

When it comes to flying these days, you get what you pay for. And with those new "basic economy fares," you don't get very much.

Take seat selection: You may have no choice or very limited options, depending on the airline. That makes it difficult or impossible for friends or family members to sit together.

In many cases, you'll get stuck with a middle seat.

Keep in mind: If you're a basic economy passenger, you're the last to board. That's always fun.

And you may not be able to use the overhead bins for free.

Finally, upgrades are not allowed, if you decide you want something better after you buy your ticket.
