Several gun control measures are working their way through the Washington state Legislature this session.
House Bill 1240, which is by request of Gov. Jay Inslee and Attorney General Bob Ferguson, would ban the manufacture, importation, distribution or sale of assault weapons in Washington state, with some exceptions.

HB 1240 allows exemptions to manufacturers and dealers selling to military and law enforcement, and to those who inherit an assault weapon.
Opponents argued HB 1240 takes away people's self-defense rifles, and the focus should instead be on giving stricter sentences to the shooters.

House Bill 1178 would repeal laws that prevent cities and counties from having more restrictive gun laws than Washington state.

House Bill 1144 would require record keeping of all transfers and establish a 10-day waiting period. The bill would also require firearms safety training and updates to the state firearm background check procedure.
