Martin County Sheriff's Office deputies say they caught a man poaching tortoises so he could eat them later Sunday evening.

Authorities say they answered a call about a "man down" at Seabranch Preserve State Park.

When they arrived, they came across 28-year-old Robert Lane on his hands and knees looking for gopher tortoises, deputies say.

Lane already had a male gopher tortoise and a female gopher tortoise in his hands, they added. He eventually admitted to deputies that he planned on taking them home to eat them, according to authorities.

Lane's case was given to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

Deputies say they returned both tortoises to their home.
