Yakima police: Bystanders kill man who was assaulting woman

YAKIMA, Wash. - Police say a man who was assaulting a woman in Yakima is dead himself after he was struck with a baton or baseball bat as bystanders intervened.

Authorities responded to the scene, outside the Connections Transitional Apartments at 110 South Naches Avenue, late Sunday night after receiving reports of a fight and a domestic violence incident.

When officers arrived, they found a 57-year-old man who lived at the complex sitting outside on the ground with a head injury. He was taken to a local hospital, where he died.

Witnesses told police the man was hitting a woman in front of the apartment when several other people tried to stop him.

Yakima police say they are trying to identify the people who intervened.
