FIFE, Wash. - A 54-year-old driver was hit in the head after a tree uprooted and fell on her car on Interstate 5 near Fife, according to the Washington State patrol.

The car, a Toyota Prius, was traveling southbound on the freeway, near 70th Street when the tree came crashing down.

The crash blocked three lanes of traffic for under an hour. At one point, traffic was backed up for at least 10 miles, the Washington State Department of Transportation says.

It is not clear how the tree fell. The driver was unconscious when troopers arrived and was later transported to Harborview Medical Center in downtown Seattle.

Crews used chainsaws to clear the scene. A tow truck removed the car from the roadway.
