SKAMANIA COUNTY, Wash. – Deputies say they found a pair of travelers Tuesday after they had been stuck in the snow on a rural forest road for two days.

Andy Nguyen, 28, and Heidi Tran, 26, left Seattle on Sunday morning on a trip to a rental cabin in the Glenwood area. When they didn’t arrive at the cabin, family members called the Skamania County Sheriff’s Office on the morning of December 1 to report them as missing.

A sheriff’s office search & rescue team went to a forest road that was likely where a computer navigation app would direct them to go. An aerial search from a fixed-wing plane helped them locate their rented SUV on the snowbound road just after 5 p.m.

The sheriff’s office sent up two Utility Terrain Vehicles, located Tran and Nguyen, and brought them back to the Trout Lake area. They were unhurt and didn’t need medical attention.

They told deputies that they were following online navigation directions and ended up getting stuck in deep snow on Sunday. Another foot-and-a-half of snow fell overnight, making it impossible for them to dig out the vehicle.

They said they rationed their food supply and the car’s fuel, which they used for heat.

“While this incident resulted in the best-case scenario, some do not. Please do not rely solely on computerized navigation. If traveling on forest roads or areas that are not maintained during winter months, please consider changing your route.”
