Tacoma Dome to close in June for $30 million renovation
TACOMA, Wash. – The Tacoma Dome will close from June until October for its first major renovation since it was built in 1983.
“It was desperately needed,” said Kim Bedier, Director of Tacoma Venues and Events.
The $30 million renovations, approved by the Tacoma City Council in 2016, include brand-new stadium seating, new restrooms, modified loading docks, and improved backstage dressing rooms.
Also, security experts and Homeland security will assess the Tacoma Dome to improve its safety.
“We have some pretty archaic systems in the building that really need to be upgraded. They’re functional, but they obviously need to be improved and just brought up to 21st century standard,” said Bedier.
The Tacoma Dome will host its final high school commencement ceremony on June 19 with plans of re-opening in October.
“The building is loved, and now it’s going to get some love so it can stand for another 30 years,” said Bedier.
