Suspected DUI driver arrested after deadly Skagit Co. crash
SEDRO-WOOLLEY, Wash. - A 20-year-old man is behind bars Tuesday for investigation of vehicular homicide after a deadly crash Monday evening near Sedro-Woolley, the Washington State Patrol reports. Alcohol or drugs were believed to be a factor in the accident.
Troopers and medics responded to the scene, in the 25700 block of Minkler Road, at about 7:40 p.m. after receiving reports of a serious crash.
Two wrecked vehicles, a dark blue BMW sedan and a gray GMC Sierra pickup, were found along the roadway. One passenger in the BMW, identified as Jonathan J. Harju, 45, of Camano Island, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver and a second passenger in the BMW were injured. The driver of the pickup was also injured.
A preliminary investigation found that the driver of the BMW, a 20-year-old Arlington man, was heading west on Minkler Road at high speed when he collided with the pickup as it was turning onto Peavey Road.
The force of the impact caused the pickup to roll over, and the BMW burst into flames while blocking the eastbound lane.
The driver of the BMW was booked into the Skagit County Jail after treatment of his injuries.
The driver of the pickup, a 73-year-old Sedro-Woolley man, and the surviving passenger of the BMW, a 26-year-old Sedro-Woolley man, were taken to a local hospital for treatment of injuries.
Minkler Road was vlocked at the scene for several hours after the crash, but has since reopened.
