PACIFIC, Wash. - A large fire at a scrap metal recycling business forced firefighters to shut down part of West Valley Highway in Pacific Tuesday evening, according to Valley Regional Fire.

The fire broke out just before 5:00 p.m. at the facility located in the 400 block of West Valley Highway S.

A thick plume of smoke could be seen by drivers on State Route 167. At one point the smoke was blowing over the roadway, slowing traffic.

Firefighters were able to quickly gain control of the fire, but remained on scene to monitor the smoldering debris.

Crews had to bring in heavy equipment to help pull apart the debris.

West Valley Highway was shut down between 3rd Ave. SW and Stewart, but reopened about an hour and a half later.
