Pedestrian killed by hit-and-run drivers near Seattle Children's Hospital
SEATTLE - A pedestrian was struck by at least two hit-and-run drivers and killed after falling in a dark stretch of road in northeast Seattle late Monday night.
Police and medics responded to the scene, at 40th Ave. NE and Sandpoint Way NE, at around 11:30 p.m. after people began calling 911 about a man who appeared to have been hit by a passing car.
Medics rushed the victim to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Detectives investigating the crash believe the 29-year-old man fell into the southbound lanes after crossing Sandpoint Way at mid-block, on the west side of Seattle Children's Hospital near the Laurelhurst neighborhood. The man was not in a crosswalk at the time.
Witnesses who spoke with detectives said the victim may have been struck by two vehicles after falling down, but they were unable to provide any vehicle descriptions. The witnesses said that none of the vehicles stopped to check on the victim.
Witnesses tried to block the man from being hit again by forming a blockade to divert passing drivers.
Detectives are now reviewing evidence and working with the Medical Examiners Office to determine the victim’s cause of death.
