Officials sign unusual pact to tear down hydroelectric dams

FILE - In the May 30, 2013, file photo, Jene McCovery, an elder with the Yurok Tribe, speaks to a group of about 50 people, mostly from the Klamath River Tribes, in Portland, Ore., about the push to restore a fishery on the Klamath River, remove four dams, and balance. Officials from Oregon, California and the Obama administration are scheduled to sign a pact Wednesday, April 6, 2016, agreeing to seek permission to tear down four hydroelectric dams that are blamed for killing fish and blocking their migration. They will also agree to protect farmers and ranchers from rising power and water prices as they work on a broader pact to bring peace to long-running water wars in the Klamath River basin, which straddles the Oregon-California border.
