Hwy. 9 still closed near Mount Vernon after new mudslide
MOUNT VERNON, Wash. - A section of Highway 9 near Mount Vernon remains closed for the third day Wednesday after another mudslide blocked the roadway, state transportation officials said.
The state Department of Transportation said in a Twitter posting that crews were nearly ready to reopen the highway Tuesday after a previous landslide when the new slide came down.
The mudslides follow days of rain that have been heavier in the North Sound region.
An earlier slide also blocked Highway 11, but that one has been cleared.
Mudslides along railroad tracks between Everett and Seattle also are preventing Sounder commuter trains from running.
