Gas main break forces evacuations, street closures in downtown Seattle

SEATTLE - Buildings were evacuated in downtown Seattle and streets were closed Friday morning after a reported natural gas main break.

The gas leak was later secured, but streets remained closed to ensure there was not dangerous level of gas in the area.

Police and emergency crews initially responded to the scene, just north of Pioneer Square at 1st Avenue and Cherry Street, at about 8:30 a.m. after receiving reports that a construction crew had ruptured a gas main.

Fire crews evcuated buildings from Yesler Way to Columbia Street on 1st and 2nd avenues as a precaution.

Motorists and pedestrians are warned to avoid the area.
