SEATTLE (KOMO) - A man accused of threatened to shoot up a mosque in Northgate is in custody after a brief Tuesday afternoon standoff.

The 37-year-old man walked out of his home and surrendered unarmed just before 3:30 p.m., a police source said.

A law enforcement source told KOMO News that a man who was barricaded inside a North Seattle home in the 11700 block of Greenwood Avenue North on Tuesday had posted a comment on Facebook threatening to open fire inside the Idris Mosque in Northgate.

No one was hurt at the Idris Mosque. The man, who has not been identified by police, apparently never made it to the mosque.

"We received information and we acted on it immediately out of an abundance of caution," said Sean O'Donnell with the Seattle Police Department. "Obviously where threats are made toward institutions, we want to be there to take rapid action to prevent any hostile or aggressive activity."

Seattle police later confirmed that a friend of the suspect alerted officers about a threat against the mosque

The suspect posted threats online and, in a separate posting, claimed to have purchased an assault rifle and extra ammunition, police said.

Police say law enforcement investigating harassment and threats to another mosque had previously contacted the man.

Hisham Farajallah, who is a member of the Idris Mosque, said police informed them immediately about the threat.

"Definitely, you can't underestimate any threat," Farajallah said. "You have to take every threat serious and you have to act accordingly."

KOMO is not naming the suspect because he has yet to be charged with a crime.
