FERNDALE, Wash. -- A knife-wielding man was shot and the gunman was stabbed as a fight escalated violently at a Ferndale motel Thursday morning.

Officers were called to the Motel 6 just before 9 a.m. for reports of a wounded man, according to Riley Sweeney with Ferndale Police. Officers and medics arrived to find a man had been shot in the chest.

As officers search the motel, the found another man in the back of the motel with a stab wound. Investigators believe he's the shooter, Sweeney said.

Both men were detained and treated for their injuries.

Detectives believe the two men got into a fight, and one shot the other while one stabbed the gunman. Sweeney wouldn't say how the two men knew each other but declared there was no danger to the public.
