EDMONDS, Wash. -- An Edmonds mom says her kids were harassed and called a racial slur outside an Edmonds business.

Edmonds police launched an investigation and have been reviewing surveillance video and doing interviews.

The incident happened Sunday night outside Harvey's Lounge off Aurora Avenue in Edmonds.

Police say a brother and sister, 18 and 14 years old, were working on a school project, taking photos and using the light from the bar's sign to capture images Sunday night.

A patron asked them to leave and they did. But when they returned a short time later to look for a lost wallet, they allege being harassed and called the n-word.

Darnesah Weary, the teens' mom, said her son parked at a neighboring business was about to walk the bar's parking lot perimeter when the confrontation occurred.

Edmond police Sgt. Josh McClure said part of the confrontation was caught on camera.

He said surveillance video shows two people come out of the bar and yell from the doorway. At one point, one of them had a bat at her side, then you see her put it down.

The incident lasted less than a couple minutes, and ended with the teens driving off.

Weary said her kids raced home, charged through the front door in hysterics. She said her daughter was frantic and so upset she could barely talk. She said her son just sat down, put his head down and was too shaken to talk.

She said her son told her he felt threatened and feared for his sister when they were being yelled at.

" 'Get off our property we don't want you here and we don't n-words,.' " said Darnesha Weary, repeating what her children told her. "They kept saying the n-word over and over again."

"It's complex it's alarming, and it has been something we have taken serious," said Sgt. McClure.

He said Edmonds police are investigating whether a crime was committed. Their detective forwarded the case to the FBI for review.

The bar's owner said out of respect for the investigation he won't comment, but has handed over all his surveillance video to police and is fully cooperating with investigators..
