East Wenatchee officer shoots, kills man wanted on warrant

EAST WENATCHEE, Wash. -- An East Wenatchee police officer shot a 25-year-old man to death early Saturday.

The dead man, Cameron Ayers, was wanted on a Department of Corrections warrant for escape from community custody, according to the Chelan County Sheriff's Office.

The Sheriff's Office, which is part of a team investigating the shooting, said the shooting took place at 2:05 a.m. in the 200 block of Bellevue Street Northwest in Douglas County.

The officer stopped a car with three people in it. The officer stopped it because it was considered a suspicious vehicle.

The officer was trying to take Ayers into custody when the officer fired multiple shots.

Two knives were found when Ayers was removed from the vehicle.

It is not known if he had armed himself with the knives.

Ayers died at Central Washington Hospital in Wenatchee.

The officer was not hurt and has been placed on administrative leave.

The officer has been identified as Kaiti Wilkins, who has been with the department for three months and previously was with the Douglas County Sheriff's Office, the spokesman said.
