City of Sammamish declares emergency over ransomware attack

The city of Sammamish said the city's computer system was under a ransomware attack Wednesday evening.

Interim Mayor Larry Patterson declared the attack an emergency so the city could bring in a security expert to help "deal with the situation without having to go through the regular contracting procedures," according to a post on the city's website.

The hope is the security expert will be able to determine which systems have been affected and the level of penetration. In the post online, the city said they know the city's internal shared files have been affected.

As a precaution to protect residents and businesses the city took down "MyBuildingPermit" and map services.

"We are actively working on two fronts - one to deal with the attack itself; the other is to implement business continuity measures," the city wrote.
