Ceremony to mark first anniversary of Dep. Daniel McCartney's death

Deputy Daniel McCartney was killed in the line of duty in January.

Tuesday afternoon, the Pierce County Sheriff's Office will remember Deputy Daniel McCartney, who was killed one year ago in the line of duty.

Overnight, Pierce County dispatch sent out a radio call in Deputy McCartney's memory.

"County 484, gone but never forgotten."

McCartney was shot and killed in Frederickson during a burglary call leaving behind a wife and three young boys.

His children also sent out a dispatch call in memory of their father and to the officers he served with.

"You are our heroes. Keep your light shining bright."

The McCartney family will attend the memorial at the sheriff's department shooting range.

The memorial is set for 1:30 p.m. in roy.

The range will be named in McCartney's honor.

McCartney responded at about 11:30 p.m. to a 911 call during which dispatchers could hear screaming and some type of altercation. McCartney arrived at the home on 200th Street East and chased after two fleeing suspects but was struck by gunfire during the pursuit as the suspects fired back.

More deputies arrived on scene and found McCartney severely injured by gunshot injuries. He was rushed in critical condition to St. Joseph Medical Center in Tacoma where he later died.
