SEATTLE - An Amazon employee who works in Seattle's South Lake Union has tested positive for coronavirus, officials say.
And outdoor gear retailer REI is closing three of its campuses after two employees reported possible exposure to coronavirus.
The infected Amazon employee is one of the new cases confirmed Tuesday. That person worked in the Brazil Building at 400 9th Avenue North.
The building remains open Wednesday and operations appear to be continuing as usual, with employees badging themselves into the building for work. Some of those employees have been wearing face masks.
The infected employee went home sick on Feb. 25, and then on Tuesday the positive test result for COVID-19 came back.
KOMO has obtained a copy of the memo Amazon sent to employees - stating that they're supporting the person and that the risk of transmission to anyone not in close contact with them is at low risk of exposure.
The memo also said the company is conducting enhanced deep cleaning and sanitizing in the office - and that anyone who doesn't feel well should stay home. That's the same advice being given for everyone - regardless of where they work or go to school.
Amazon employees who had close contact with the employee - within six feet - were notified separately.
And Amazon is not the only company now making changes.
REI closed three of its campuses - in Kent, Seattle Georgetown and Bellevue Eastgate - after two employees reported possible exposure to coronavirus.
The company is deep cleaning and disinfecting those campuses so that they can reopen Thursday.
REI is also taking extra precaution across all of its facilities. The company says it proactively did a deep cleaning at its King County and Alderwood stores. All stores right now are operating under normal hours.
REI also says it is stepping up cleaning efforts across all offices, stores and distribution centers.
