Man dead, woman injured after shooting in Seattle's Interbay area
SEATTLE - A man is dead and a woman was injured by gunfire in a shooting incident Tuesday morning in Seattle's Interbay area, police said.
Police and medics responded to the scene, a condominium in the 3000 block of 14th Avenue West, at about 7 a.m. after receiving a 911 call from a woman who said she was bleeding from the face, said Patrick Michaud of the Seattle police.
Two people, a 70-year-old man and a 70-year-old woman, were found inside the condominium. The man was pronounced dead at the scene from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
"Everybody is shocked. Just absolutely blown away by this," said neighbor Eric Zoeckler. "People burst into tears when they heard the news."
Zoeckler knows the couple well. He said the husband and wife were retired and traveled a lot. In fact, they just returned home from London a few weeks ago.
"She communicated with one of our residents every day in London saying how much they were enjoying it," Zoeckler said.
County records show the couple bought their unit in 2004.
The husband did a lot of handiwork around the complex and swam every day.
Neighbors are now puzzled as they try to understand what happened.
"We have no idea. We really don't," said Zoeckler. "We've all been thinking about anything that possibly could go wrong."
The woman was rushed to Harborview Medical Center with a single gunshot wound to the face. She is listed in serious condition but is expected to survive. Witnesses said she was conscious and able to talk to medics as she was placed in an ambulance.
"We're here for her," said Zoeckler. "We're very concerned. Very concerned."
Seattle police spokesman Mark Jamieson said the shooting appears to be a case of attempted murder and suicide. There are no other suspects in the case.
Michaud said the man and woman are a married couple. A neighbor said they are longtime residents of the condo complex.
