Forget the packaged supplement - eat your probiotics!

You may have seen ads on social media for supplements containing probiotics.

I asked registered dietitian Kim Larson if there is substance to the hype.

"Probiotics are the hot new craze right now," Larson says. "Because there's been an explosion of research being done to learn 'how does this gut bacteria affect our health. And so when we are talking about probiotics we're basically talking about live bacterial strains that confer a health benefit."

Larson explains probiotics in general help tamp down the bad bacteria in our gut. They also improve colon health and our immune system.

Larson tells me a good way to know if you are getting live bacteria, make sure the label on your food says 'live and active cultures'. This is why you want to be careful of packaged supplements on the shelf that claim to have probiotics.

"What we know about the ones in the store is some of them don't live beyond the manufacturing and processing."

Larson expresses the importance of consuming probiotics naturally, and be found in fermented foods like yogurt, sauerkraut, kimchi, pickles and buttermilk.
