The heart of a city often refers to a business, park, or municipal center. Seattle is different. Its heart is Pike Place Market--where cultures blend in the largest continuously running public market in the country. Fifty years ago, this civic marvel was nearly razed, the victim of ambitious urban renewal.

“Labor of Love: Saving Pike Place Market” is the little-known story of how a small group of resisters fought Seattle’s power elite and, against all odds, won!

That victory saved a priceless piece of Seattle’s history and culture and inspired cities worldwide to fight for their public markets.

This 30-minute documentary marks and celebrates the 50th anniversary of the vote that saved Pike Place Market in November 1971.

“Labor of Love: Saving Pike Place Market” shares the first-hand account from the advocates, who staffed the picket lines, collected tens of thousands of signatures and waged significant battles with the city's elite and powerful to save Pike Place Market from the wrecking ball.

“Labor of Love: Saving Pike Place Market” was produced in partnership with KOMO 4, the Friends of the Market, and the Pike Place Market Preservation and Development Authority.
