Man presumed drowned in Skykomish River

INDEX, Wash. -- A man in his 20s is missing and presumed drowned in the Skykomish River, Snohomish County Sheriff's deputies said.

The man was part of a group of four adults near the Troublesome Creek Campground Sunday afternoon when he and another man decided to go swimming in the river underneath a waterfall.

The water was very turbulent near the waterfall, making it difficult to swim, according to sheriff spokeswoman Capt. Susy Johnson. One man barely made it back to shore, and they saw the other man go under and not resurface.

A dive team was called to the area to search the waters but came up empty, Johnson said. The search was called off as darkness approached and the dive team will return Monday to conduct a recovery mission.

The man's identity has not been released, but Johnson said he was from Lake Stevens.
