ELLENSBURG, Wash. - A local brewing company is facing pushback after posting doctored photos of Gov. Jay Inslee in a Nazi uniform in the window of their business.
The owners of Whipsaw Brewing say after the pictures went viral on social media, they started receiving criticism and even some vowing to harm them.
"I was getting people from Tacoma and Seattle threatening us," Debbie Tierney, owner of Whipsaw Brewing, said.
The messages in the window were critical of Inslee's "safe start" approach to the coronavirus pandemic, comparing him to a tyrannical dictator. Not everyone, however, was upset by the imagery.
"I laughed! It was funny," Jeff Stone, a regular customer, said. "It was making fun of politicians, isn't that what American's do?" he added.
Other messages included their support for law enforcement and for the business' decision not to play any NFL, NBA, or MLB games due to perceived disrespect by kneeling during the national anthem. They also asked customers to not complain about social distancing or masking guidelines.
When word of the messages reached social media, Tierney and her husband said some people threatened to harm them and their building. Now they're on full alert every day they go to work.
"It terrifies me, but I won't stop," she said. "I'm not going to stop. I'm going to keep voicing my opinion."
Tierney said recent vandalism at the Kittitas County Republican headquarters worried her that violence could come to her business as well. She even had to let go of at least one staff member out of fear of safety.
The response to her controversial opinions hasn't been all negative. According to Tierney, her business has been increasing.
"Community support has been amazing, support from other areas has been amazing," Tierney said.
While visiting the brewery, many customers told KIMA-TV News they were from out of town and made a point to drive hours to support the owners.
One couple even came from Redmond, about a two-hour drive, to have lunch and a few beers.
"They took a stand for law enforcement and the military and that's very important to us," Kirby Wilbur, a conservative talk radio host said. "So we came over to support them."
While Tierney disagrees with Inslee's safe start order, she said Whipsaw is following all the safety guidelines put in place by the Kittitas County Public Health Department.
