Watch: Northern Lights peek out over Western Washington
A bit of a treat Tuesday night to anyone who was up really late -- a somewhat surprise visit of the Northern Lights.
Greg Johnson of Skunkbayweather.com noticed his time lapse web cameras were picking up the green hues as the clouds parted around 10 p.m over Hansville. and then the show really got going after midnight.
According to Spaceweather.com, a minor solar storm was already in progress when the Earth was hit by another blast of energy from the sun, revving up the aurora. Reports came in from a wide swath of the northern United States.
"A minor geomagnetic storm was already in progress on Feb. 19th when a CME struck Earth's magnetic field at approximately 0200 UT. The impact revved-up the storm and sent Northern Lights spilling across the Canadian border into the United States. You can see their budding gallery here.
