Is it going to rain on Halloween? Just flip a coin...

Kids in the Northwest are well versed in coming up with Halloween costumes that are not only scary, but somewhat waterproof. It seems like it rains on every Halloween, but guess what? In reality, it's about a coin flip as to whether any given year will feature the need for mylar and rubber.

The National Weather Service sent out a note of the past 10 Halloweens and sure enough, it has rained at some point on seven of them, although only five had measurable rain. That's about on par with the long-historical average since going back 120 years, we've had measurable rain on 65 of them, or roughly 50/50. (There has been a trace of snow in both 1935 and 1984.)

Oct. 31 is historically the day with the most frequent rain occurrences in October, but that's to be expected since we're rapidly heading toward the rainy peak of our year in mid-November and late October is much wetter than the start of the month.

What *is* a bit amusing is that there has been a distinct lack of rain on Nov. 1 -- just 56 times in the past 120 years. This is similar to the smirk Mother Nature gives us by having July 4th being the wettest day in July, with somewhat drier weather historically on July 3rd and 5th.

The last few years have been relatively mild with highs in the mid 50s to even 60 degrees last year -- four of the past five years have been warmer than the average high of 55.

This year's version will probably fit in right around normal. We're expecting highs in the normal mid 50s range. There will be some showers in the morning, but showers will be decreasing in the afternoon so there is a decent chance much of the region will be dry and you can parade around in that Gremlins costume with no issues (just no eating candy once it passes midnight!)
