What's Seattle's wettest day on record?
A whopping 5.02 inches of rain fell from midnight to midnight on October 20, 2003, obliterating the old record of 3.41 inches that fell on November 20, 1959. That's breaking the record by 47% -- or to put that in perspective, it'd be like someone hitting 107 home runs in a season.
More perspective: Seattle only averages 3.51 inches of rain for the entire month of October. And the 5.02 inches represents almost 14 percent of our annual rainfall average.
What happened? We had a very juicy front stall right over the central Puget Sound area, and it was perfectly angled so that the bulk of the heavy rain streaming in from the southwest just missed getting blocked by the Olympics. It was one for the ages!
