Fans cheer on Seattle Sounders FC, celebrate MLS Cup Champs at home opener
SEATTLE -- Organizers said thousands of fans turned out Sunday to celebrate the Seattle Sounders FC and to cheer on the MLS Cup Champions in their first home game of the new season.
And they celebrated a 3-1 victory over the New York Red Bulls.
The Rave Green home opener brought together fans of all ages like 6-year-old Nathan Sadler and his family from Wenatchee. They geared up for the big game.
“I’ve got a scarf, gloves, hats, a beanie,” said Sadler.
“It’s our first (Sounders) game to ever watch (in person,)” said 7-year-old brother, Noah Sadler.
Many fans vividly remember the dramatic championship victory last season on penalty kicks.
“The end of the game was amazing,” said Krystal Sadler. “It went into overtime. It was crazy. It was so intense for us to win. Just so amazing.”
So many of those fans also turned out for the parade through downtown Seattle.
Fans like Mukilteo youth soccer coach Danny Daniels have been there from the very beginning.
“I’m a season ticket holder since '09. So, I’ve invested in this team,” said Daniels.
Daniels showed off his jacket where he collected the autographs of many different players over the years.
“Roger Levesque is on there somewhere who is my favorite favorite player,” said Daniels.
Like so many others, he couldn’t waited for this big home game in Seattle.
“I’m going to be out in the field carrying the (team) shield for the opening ceremonies,” said Daniels.
Like so many fans, he was full of pride for the Sounders and passion for soccer.
“I love the sport, I love the game,” said Daniels. “We’re a community sport and we feel it every day.”
Sunday’s game included a big pre-game celebration for the MLS champs where the team championship banner was unveiled.
