Take a Happy Together Road Trip with KOMO's Art Sanders

This summer the Happy Together Tour of 60's Rock Stars made stops along the west coast. And, for many of those shows, I was there. I tagged along as they played to packed crowds in Washington and California.

Mark Volman is one half of the group, The Turtles. His second job is as a professor at Belmont University where he teaches a music business curriculum. Each summer, a lucky group of Mark's students gets to work on the road with the tour.

In the audio part of this presentation, I interviewed Mark and several other stars of the show about the students' real life experience. The rock stars work closely with the students in all areas of rock show production. The photos show the results of their work - the on stage presentation.

Right off the top, you see The Turtles, Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman, doing their comedy parody of, "Beauty and the Beast," just before they launch into their hits including their biggest hit, "Happy Together."

Next up in the photos, is the legendary group, The Boxtops (The Letter, Cry Like a Baby) including Gary Talley, Bill Cunningham and Rick Levy. Then, Bob Cowsill, part of the high energy family group, The Cowsills, including sister Susan and brother Paul (Hair, The Rain, The Park and Other Things aka The Flower Girl song, Love American Style), tells us how much fun it is to travel with the kids.

More memories kick in when The Association, Jules Alexander, Jim Yester and Del Ramos (Windy, Cherish, Never My Love, Along Comes Mary) all decked out in white, take the stage. Jules says the students brought back his faith in humanity because they were really serious about learning their craft.

Ron Dante, of The Archies and The Cuff Links fame (Sugar, Sugar, Tracy) adds that their energy made the show really fun. He says that one of the students even jumped rope on stage during the finale.

Chuck Negron, formerly of Three Dog Night, (Joy to the World, One, Celebrate) also mentors the students along the way.

There's a reason the fans return year after year to see the Happy Together Tour. It's packed with great music and a lot of fun. And, the students apply early to join in. It is a very happy win-win. The stars all agree. They are on stage every night passing down what they've learned to a whole new generation. I certainly had fun! So, catch a Happy Together show and see why.

Also backing the stars is the Happy Together Band made up of bandleader Godfrey Townsend with Barry Waller, Manny Focarazzo and Chris Camilleri.

Thanks to the Happy Together management for allowing us to tag along and to my wife, Candy Kayne, for the photos and production assistance.
