Prize scammers use social media to troll for victims

SEATTLE, Wash. -- Prize scams are as old as the hills, and yet people keep falling for them — sending the fraudsters hundreds, sometimes thousands of dollars, to claim their non-existent prizes. Fraudsters still use the phone, the mail and email. But they've now also gone digital – big time!

Contest con-artists have had great success using social media. In fact, social media is now involved in one-third of the sweepstakes fraud complaints received by the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3). And the vast majority of those take place on Facebook. A new report from the BBB says contest con artists took in more than $117 million dollars last year.
