A West Texas A&M University Police Officer has died after being bitten by a feral cat two weeks ago.

According to the University Police Department, Cpl. Monty D. Platt died Tuesday night at the University Medical Center in Lubbock.

UPD said Platt was bitten by a feral cat while on duty and responding to a call on campus. On Thursday, August 3, he was not feeling well and was taken to an urgent care center with a severe reaction to medication prescribed to prevent infections from the bite. He was admitted to ICU that night. The next morning, Platt was taken to the burn unit at UMC in Lubbock because, according to UPD, the injuries he suffered from the medication were "so severe."

While at UMC, Platt was placed on a ventilator and treated for the wounds. However, Tuesday night, his kidneys shut down and his blood temperature dropped. UPD said Platt passed away later in the evening.

UPD said a memorial service for Platt will be conducted at 10 a.m. on Friday, August 11, at the St. Ann's Church at 605 38th St. in Canyon. The service will be followed by a graveside memorial at the Dreamland Cemetery Association at 26500 U.S. 87 .

"Campus Law Enforcement lost a great officer in Corporal Monty D. Platt," UPD said in a Facebook post. "All of us at the University Police Department extend our prayers to the family during this difficult time."

Platt had served with the UPD since 1996.
