High school student killed, another injured in sledding accident
NEWRY, Maine (WGME) – A high school student is killed, and another is seriously injured, after a sledding accident.
It happened just before two Wednesday morning at Sunday River.
Resort employees say the slopes throughout the park close well before midnight, and they say the three teenagers involved in this incident snuck onto the course after they closed.
The Oxford County Sheriff's Office says they responded to a call after 1 a.m., and found three teenagers who crashed while sledding on the Tempest Trail of Sunday River.
Employees say they were found on a half black diamond course. Portsmouth, New Hampshire school officials and residents say that two of the boys involved go to school at Portsmouth High School.
School officials released a statement saying senior David Kohlhase died from the accident, and another Portsmouth student is severely injured.
"All I know is that the other individual sustained serious injury, and I haven't received any updates on that," Oxford County Acting Sheriff Hart Daley said. "They were young men who probably went out there to have fun and it ended in tragedy."
Resort employees say they don’t often see people sneaking onto the course late at night.
