SEATTLE - A worker has died after falling off of a gravel barge on the Duwamish Waterway in South Seattle early Thursday morning.

Calls came in to the Seattle Fire Department saying that a person had possibly fallen into the water at about 4:45 a.m. Thursday at 5225 East Marginal Way South.

Detective Mark Jamieson of the Seattle police says the 37-year-old man was working on the barge, which was trying to tie up at a concrete plant, when a line broke and struck him.

Fire crews recovered the worker from the water in critical condition, but they later pronounced him dead at the scene.

Jamieson says police expect the Coast Guard and the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration to investigate.
