MERCER ISLAND, Wash. - A 54-year-old woman called 911 in a panic Saturday morning as her SUV careened through stop signs and traffic lights.

The woman, in a Nissan Xterra, told operators that her gas pedal was stuck.

The pedal became stuck as she exited from Interstate 90 westbound to Island Crest Way, she said.

She told operators that she had attempted to apply the parking brake and use the brake pedal to keep the vehicle at a slow speed.

The brakes became less effective as they heated up and she continued to barrel through traffic, hitting speeds of over 45 miles-per-hour, Mercer Island police said.

911 operators eventually advised her to turn off the SUV's ignition using the key. She rolled to a stop in the 7900 block of Island Crest Way.

Officers on-scene weren't able to determine what caused the pedal to stick.

No injuries were reported. The driver arranged for the vehicle to be towed.
