Woman delivering newspapers helps family escape fire
VANCOUVER, Wash. - A woman delivering newspapers helped a family escape a house fire in Vancouver early Wednesday morning.
The fire started at around 2 a.m. at a home located at 1005 SE 123rd Avenue.
Firefighters said the fire was contained in the garage.
Three family members escaped the fire. No one was hurt.
Jonathan Duenas told KATU he was the last one to wake up after a knock on the door. A newspaper delivery woman saw smoke coming from the house and wanted to make sure everyone got out safely, Duenas said.
"Everybody was yelling and there was smoke coming from somewhere in the house. So we grabbed my grandmother and my uncle and we ran outside," Duenas said. "You could see that there was a lot of smoke coming from the garage. You could see flames coming, and that's when we called 911."
The Red Cross is helping the family find a place to stay.
Investigators are looking into what caused the fire.
KATU's Mary Loos contributed to this story.
