Whidbey Island police, residents fed up with crime

WHIDBEY ISLAND, Wash. -- Whidbey Island residents are fed up with an ongoing crime problem, and they say there's no easy solution to fix it.

Valli Eichstedt's property was burglarized recently, and she says she stopped several others who were in the process of trying to rob her again.

Residents like Eichstedt say the robbers are getting more brazen and brave. Just recently a clerk at the Valero gas station was held up with a shotgun.

The Island County Sheriff's Office has had 296 reported residential burglaries on Whidbey Island this year.

Budget cuts several years ago left the office without a drug detective. No proactive drug enforcement means more drugs, which investigators say means more crime.

Eichstedt says residents are arming themselves so they are better protected.

"They're the ones doing the wrong thing, they better expect consequences" she said.
