The water main broke at about 5 a.m. beneath the store's parking lot, in the 17400 block of 270th Place, forcing up a large section of asphalt and cracking it.
The leak was detected by a city worker who was driving in the area and received a low water pressure alarm. He quickly found the leak and alerted crews, who were able to shut off water to the leaking main by 6 a.m.
Authorities said the worker's quick action prevented an even worse mess at the scene.
Several homes in the neighborhood are now without water service due to the shutdown.
It was not immediately clear if the Kohl's store will open Tuesday morning. It also was not known if any other businesses in the area were flooded.
