Washington storm: Mount Baker Highway still closed

SEATTLE (AP) - Washington Transportation Department officials say the Mount Baker Highway east of Maple Falls is likely to remain closed into the weekend due to heavy snow and rain that have caused more than 100 trees to fall across the road.

Elsewhere in Western Washington, highway crews on Thursday succeeded in reopening sections of two highways that had been closed by snow, slides and fallen trees in the Hood Canal area.

A 25-mile segment of U.S. Highway 101 between Hoodsport and Brinnon was opened Thursday evening. Earlier in the day, a 15-mile segment of U.S.101 reopened in the Shelton-Hoodsport area.

A seven-mile stretch of State Route 106 along Hood Canal also reopened after crews finished clearing fallen trees and plowing snow.
