Volunteers help rebuild struggling grandmother's home
LAKEWOOD, Wash. -- Volunteers are coming to the rescue of a Lakewood woman who nearly lost her home after a string of heartbreaking tragedies.
The charitable group "Rebuilding Together South Sound," along with volunteers from Columbia Bank, were remodeling Karen Garriss' house Saturday so Garriss' can keep her cherished home.
"It helps, because it keeps our family together. All of us are now living under the same roof. We have our home that we have all our memories in," Garriss said.
In the last few years, Garriss lost her husband and daughter to cancer, and in 2006 Garriss' niece was murdered.
Garriss is raising two grandchildren by herself now, and can no longer work because of a disability.
