Victim burglarized during Night Out Against Crime potluck

SEATTLE -- In what could possibly be the most ironic crime of the week, a Fremont resident was burglarized while attending her neighborhood's Night Out Against Crime potluck.

According to the Seattle Police Department's report for the incident, the victim left her home in the 4200 block of Third Avenue Northwest around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday to attend the nearby potluck, part of an annual nationwide event to support crime prevention.

The victim returned home 90 minutes later to discover someone had come in through her unlocked front door and stolen a necklace and $200 cash from her bedroom.

A leader of the neighborhood block watch called the incident "sad and surprising" in an email to residents, who will at least now have a specific example to discuss during next year's Night Out event.
