Two dead, two injured in Monroe head-on crash

MONROE, Wash. -- Two people were killed and two others -- including a child -- were injured in a Monday afternoon head-on crash near Monroe.

The crash happened at about 3:15 p.m. on Highway 522 west of Monroe. A Mitsubishi Eclipse was heading eastbound when a witness says the car veered off the road and clipped a construction barrel.

The driver over-corrected and swerved into the westbound lane, crashing head-on into a Ford Fusion, according to Washington State Patrol trooper Keith Leary.

A female passenger in the Fusion was killed and the male driver was injured. The man driving the Eclipse was severely injured in the crash and later died at the hospital. A young child riding in the backseat of the Eclipse was also injured, Leary said.

All the injured were taken to Harborview Medical Center with unknown injuries.

Family member Mike Racek told KOMO at Harborview Medical Center the injured little girl's name is Bella. She is just over a year old.

"She's the sweetest little thing you've ever seen," he said. "I know that Bella is fighting hard, she's doing everything she can to make it through. It's mostly shock, it's too much for people to handle right now and they're just helping her fight for her life."

Leary said a stretch of Highway 522 near Fales Road will be closed for several hours while troopers investigate and clear the scene.
