TACOMA, Wash. - A solemn police escort to honor fallen Pierce County sheriff's deputy Daniel McCartney was held Tuesday in Tacoma.
McCartney's body was moved from the Pierce County Medical Examiner's Office in Tacoma to Mountain View Memorial Home in Lakewood.
Meanwhile, a memorial to McCartney is growing at the Pierce County Sheriff's South Precinct in Puyallup. The Sheriff's Office posted on Facebook a big thank-you for all of the cards, calls and flowers.
Friends in several communities are mourning the loss of McCartney, who previously worked as a peace officer in Aberdeen and Hoquiam and who lived with his wife and three young boys in Yelm, where he was a popular fixture at Crossfit.
Shon Malone, a friend of McCartney's and owner of Crossfit Yelm, said McCartney mentored others as he pushed himself.
"As soon as you met him, instantaneously … you felt like you've known him forever," Malone said. "And he just made you feel like you were one of his family members. That's just the way he was. Just instantaneously … you liked the guy."
Anyone who would like to help the McCartney family in their time of sorrow and need can contribute to a legacy fund that has been set up. Donations can be made at any Tapco Credit Union or online at www.tpcrimestoppers.com. This is the only official fund supported by the Pierce County Sheriff's Office.
All of the donations will go to Deputy McCartney's wife and his three sons just 4, 6 and 9 years old.
