Firefighters say the woman was sleeping in her first floor apartment at about about 2 a.m. when she awoke to the smell of smoke.
The woman quickly woke her two kids and the trio escaped from the apartment. As she called 911, the woman ran to the second floor and began alerting neighbors, according to the Everett Fire Department.
Firefighters responded to the apartment complex, located in the 800 block of 75th Street SE, at 2:11 a.m. They quickly upgraded the fire to a second alarm to bring in more firefighters.
Fire crews first believed residents were trapped inside the burning building, but it was later confirmed that everyone had escaped.
Investigators believe the fire started in a first floor unit and spread to the floors above and the attic. The fire crews were eventually able to extinguish the blaze, but not before it did significant damage to the building.
About 35 residents were displaced. No one was injured, but two cats died, according to firefighters.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
