Suspected drunk driver crashes by house after 120-mph chase up I-5

TACOMA, Wash. - A suspected drunk driver caught speeding up Interstate 5 at more than 120 mph managed to evade state troopers, only to crash minutes later in the bushes beside a Tacoma home, the Washington State Patrol reports.

Troopers say it all started when they tried to pull over the driver of the speeding car on northbound I-5 early Thursday.

The suspect failed to stop, passed a car on the freeway shoulder at very high speed, then turned off on southbound 84th Street. The suspect kept going, speeding down the center turn lane of one street before veering off into a residential neighborhood at speeds of over 60 mph, troopers said.

At that point, troopers discontinued the chase - but just minutes later they found the suspect's car, crashed into bushes just inches from a house.

"His driving was erratic, he was going too fast through the area," says Trooper Shannon Laux, who took part in the chase.

The suspect was taken into custody and booked into jail for investigation of driving under the influence and attempting to elude police.

A bottle of suspected alcoholic beverage was found in the suspect's car.
