Suspect arrested in beating death of homeless man

SEATTLE -- The Seattle Police Department has arrested one suspect in connection with the murder of a homeless man found beaten to death in late September near Safeco Field.

On Sept. 28, a passerby noticed Alvaro Ruiz lying under a blanket near Fourth Avenue South and Edgar Martinez Drive South and not moving. Detectives later determined Ruiz had been beaten to death.

An investigation led detectives to discover Ruiz had been in a dispute with two other men about a month before he was murdered, and police arrested one of those men for investigation of homicide Saturday in South Seattle.

Ruiz, a Mexican immigrant, occasionally worked as a day laborer in Seattle. According to those who knew him, he was learning English by copying down song lyrics in the hopes of returning to Mexico to work in tourism.

His body is being returned to Mexico by Casa Latina.

Police have identified the second suspect in Ruiz's death and are still looking for him.
