Supporters rally for Syrian refugees in Seattle

SEATTLE - Dozens of people made a visual case for welcoming refugees into the United States in Seattle on Saturday afternoon.

The group - Americans for Refugees and Immigrants - gathered at Victor Steinbrueck Park near Pike Place Market to show their support for Governor Inslee's stance on accepting Syrian refugees.

Signs that read "Let them in" and "Be on the right side of history" were held by demonstrators who were joined by Congressman Jim McDermott, and other local officials.

One woman said she brought her young boy along to teach him the value of inclusion.

"We take very seriously what it says in the Statue of Liberty. My middle name is Liberty. It means a great deal to me that he understands that we can't give into the politics of fear and intimidation," she said.

Gov. Inslee said previously that the state would welcome Syrian refugees if the federal government determines that any of the 10,000 people that President Barack Obama's administration has pledged to resettle over the next year will head to Washington state.
