State making plans to clear Oso mudslide highway

EVERETT, Wash. (AP) - Community meetings are planned next week as Snohomish County and state officials discuss plans to clear or replace the one-mile stretch of Highway 530 covered by the Oso mudslide.

The Daily Herald reports meetings are scheduled Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday in Darrington, Oso and Arlington.

The mudslide blocks direct traffic between Darrington and Interstate 5, turning what was a 45-minute drive to Everett into a two-hour detour through Highway 20 in Skagit County.

Transportation Department spokesman Travis Phelps says so much of the highway is still buried it's to early to tell whether the roadway is salvageable.
