Stabbing victim's friend: 'This was due to a jealous rage'

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. -- A Federal Way woman is in jail and facing accusations of stabbing her husband to death.

Bonita O'Neal is being held without bail at the Regional Justice Center in Kent for investigation of 2nd degree murder. A friend of the victim calls the stabbing the result of a "jealous rage."

Victim Eric Winters may have had a troubled past, but neighbors in their quiet Federal Way cul de sac say he and wife, O'Neal, never showed any sign of problems and were good neighbors. Federal Way police say they have no history of domestic violence between the couple - no hint of trouble until the 911 call Wednesday night.

"The suspect in the case actually called 911 and said it was an accidental stabbing," said Federal Way police spokeswoman Cathy Shrock.

Winters died at the scene and police arrested O'Neal for investigation of 2nd degree murder. The mother of Winters' seven year old daughter says she'd seen him just 30 minutes earlier.

"He bought my daughter her last pair of shoes yesterday," said Patrina Wilson.

Wilson said she and Winters remained friends after the birth of their daughter, but that it was an issue for O'Neal, who then married Winters in 2010.

"This was due to a jealous rage," said Wilson, "a woman that just has a lot of hate in her heart."

Winters did have a criminal record. He was convicted of robbery in 1981 and of robbery and theft in 1993, and the Department of Corrections says he was in prison from 1981 to 2001. Nonetheless, Wilson says Winter turned his life around and hadn't gotten in trouble since.

"He went to work, he stayed out of trouble, because he wanted to see his daughter grow up," she said.

Federal Way police say they don't yet have a motive for the stabbing. Shrock said they frequently see knives in cases of domestic violence, but Wednesday's incident was unusual.

"We don't have a lot of female defendants in domestic violence," she said.

In the probable cause statement, O'Neal told police she was cutting up frozen chicken in the kitchen when Winters came up behind her, she turned around and accidentally stabbed him. In that same statement, O'Neal's 17-year old son allegedly told police that it occurred when he was trying to break up a fight between the couple.
