Southbound I-5 reopens near Chehalis after 3 semis, pickup collide
CHEHALIS, Wash. - Southbound Interstate 5 has reopened just south of Chehalis after crews cleaned up wreckage and debris from a crash involving multiple semi trucks.
State troopers and medics responded to the scene, the southbound lanes of I-5 near Napavine, at about 4:15 a.m. after receiving reports of a serious accident.
Three crashed semi trucks and a burning pickup truck were found at the collision scene. In addition, the jersey barrier was pushed into the northbound lanes by the force of the crash.
The driver of the pickup was airlifted to a hospital with serious injuries.
The investigation and reopening of the freeway was delayed for hours because one of the semi trucks was hauling hazardous material, said Trooper Will Finn. He said there was no risk to the public from the material.
The circumstances leading up to the crash are under investigation.
